It’s just as much a defence of AI as it is a defence of Bender, paintbrushes, packaging tape or toilet bowls.

Everything can be art in the right context. AI is not more or less of a tool. It’s not the devil and will not kill art or creativity. It is a new canvas, nothing more or less.

That sounds quite elitist. 😉

Is only Michelangelo art and Andy Warhol not, because Campbell’s Tomato soup is just a repeated print?

What about “ready-made” sculptures by Duchamp? His stuff is at the Centre Pompidou in Paris.

Yes, but that is exactly what digital and sampling were criticised for.
That it’s not art, if you can copy it and that it requires no skill to use a mouse or stylus. And that there is no creative process or own input, if you make music by just compiling copies of Kraftwerk or the Honey Drippers.

As someone who tried to make AI create the image I wanted it to create until I gave up (foto for my website), I can confirm for you Gen-AI is also just a medium.

But granted, it considerably shrinks the gap between, say, a kid’s drawing of a woman and the Mona Lisa to a much smaller distance.

…and of course the debate about musicians only creating derivative works, if they use samples.

Wasn’t there a discussion years ago, that real art must be marble or on canvas, that digital data can’t be art? Some artists and critics claiming, that nothing is art, unless it was created with real physical brush or by an artist’s chisel ?

I’m not sure, AI’s evolution is fundamentally different.

The one thing actually making war more likely is US waffling and kowtowing to Russia because it emboldens Putin and his clique.
Putin has desires on all of Ukraine, the Baltics, Poland and more.
And he underestimates Europe. He might see opportunity where there is none and start war based on that.

Ugh. Lost for words.

Had they asked anyone who knows anything about negotiating with Russia, they would have heard this is exactly what you would expect. Then again, this is hostile negotiation 101. And no, Putin is not your buddy.

This administrations stupidity is astounding, again and again.

Which by the way shows, how blue-eyed and naive everyone is, who thinks the alignment problem for advanced AI doesn’t exist.
Or those who say such an AI will naturally be aligned with human interests, just because it would be a product of our own making.

Luckily we are still far away from this scenario.

Not worrying so much at the moment - at least until someone solves battery life and self-replication becomes more than just fragile folding robots in labs.

Well, my circadian rhythm does not and will never adjust to an alarm clock, no matter when that thing rings.

I’m for getting up with the sun, whenever it rises throughout the year. Did some hiking for 6 weeks at a time in my twenties waking up like that. Pure bliss.

In economics, it’s practically impossible even dangerous to “bring prices down” after inflation hit. It’s ok for single products like eggs or coffee, but that’s not reversing inflation.

How it works (and has always worked) is to raise wages after inflation. Who claims differently is bullshitting.

This is JD Vance using Orban’s and European nationalist parties’ talking points in a US context.

It is also what is the core of the new US National Security Strategy’s criticism toward Europe, that Europe would lose its “western” character unless immigration into Europe was stopped.

Case in point…

Ok great. Guess we will have to take the personal reassurance of a guy responsible for a 250 page forum argument about whether or not his jacket fitted that Trump does not seek to subvert Western democracy

Why lie? Because the party is always right.

The analysts also do not differentiate the NSS’s position on the EU vs. on Europe.

Within the limits of obviously veiled speech the NSS practically advocates to castrate or abolish the EU to “make Europe great again” (i.e. its nation states) - not just nibble at the edges of regulation.
