I didn't have a problem with it, though (b) I have encountered the Eminence before in a later story and (a) I'm an old enough fan to be used to coming to things in the wrong order.

The confusion is intended - it's sort of a sequel to Destroy the Infinite, but it came out the year before it! So the Doctor has encountered the Eminence before, but we (like the companion) know nothing about it.

The manipulation is pretty prominent though - one of the (many) things I love about Battlefield is when the Doctor tells Ace strictly not to follow and then anticipates to the second when she'll catch up with him.
