Invert the tropes
Speculative fiction is filled with clichéd, over-used and predictable concepts - what we call tropes. I've inverting some, turned them on their heads, to provide inspiration!

This is why we write. It's all about the exploration.
Columbus did it with ships.
Writers do it with words.

(And pens. Or Word processors. But you know what I mean)
It's taken a while, but I now have outline plans for one of three new short story settings. I wrote 1,000 words on the first of these today. I'm not sure where this story series will take me. Half the fun is finding out!

Did you know Charles Dickens was the first "authorpreneur"?
Merchandise linked to his serialisation of The Pickwick Papers included cards, illustrating the characters.
By summer 1836 he'd sold 400 copies, by November 1837, forty thousand!
That's how you succeed!

Why do we have to be dogged by bad luck?

What have dogs done to deserve such ridicule? Why can't you be catted by bad luck? Or better still, cowed?

Couldn't we be dogged by good luck instead?

I'm a writer, I have to find answer to these questions! 🤔😒

#FantasyIndiesNovember 10: Favourite line I've written:

"There were fairies at the bottom of my garden, and they were torturing someone."
From 'The Bastard from Fairyland' - my grimdark trilogy.

It's part of a TikTok "Best Opening Line" I've been told.

This secret organisation has kept the public safe since 1666. Until now. Arcane forces, dominated for so long, are ready to fight back. One dark elf stands in their way and he's severely compromised.

My favourite series is Richard Morgan's Land Fit For Heroes trilogy - the original grimdark story. The bitterness of his flawed hero, Ringil Eskieth, arises out of the execution of the man he loves and drives his need for vengeance. Brilliant storytelling. #AMoRaR

Love this definition of writing motivation.
#SFFChat All my books are love letters to Iceland and/or remixes of #NorseMythology. I’m writing what I love reading, or what I would like to read if it existed ( #WhyOdinDrinks). There’s space for so many original takes on Norse lore when you realise it’s character-based more than plot-based.
#SFFChat Q1: What roles do myth, history, memory, or remembrance/commemoration play in your work?

The #WIPSnips word for November 5th is "trail"

This snippet is from my WIP, 'August Furst: Literary Investor' and describes a bucolic scene a la Tolkien.
I'm labelling the story as "the lovechild of Jasper Fforde and Douglas Adams".

#WIPSnips Today, we go with 'trailers' and give some attention to the aftermath of The Great War between the Æsir and the Vanir. Also, Bragi's superpower.

#NorseMythology won't know what hit it...
