Excellent advice for people of any background, including scientists and engineers, looking to do policy work in the federal government.

As usual, the most important words: “reach out” i.e. network. If you meet career feds and they want to work with you, they will figure out how to make it happen.

My take after 35 years as a public and private sector researcher, consultant, and advisor: Scholarship is hard; translating it into understandable and actionable policy support is in many ways harder. Also more rewarding and requiring a different (don't call it "soft") skillset. Give it a try!
