In 1839 Herman Melville visited Liverpool. Afterwards he wrote a semi autobiographical novel called Redburn based on his visit. He returned to Liverpool in 1856 and met up with Nathaniel Hawthorne. You can read all about it here redburnsliverpool.blogspot.com
