Just a random reminder that Kim Davis feeling the awesome power of the Lord is the single most off-putting sight in the world.

Now Playing: CRIMSON PEAK. Just so there’s no misunderstanding, all those times I have said that I’m not picky about stage accents and think that British actors trying to sound American generally sound fine, I wasn’t talking about Charlie Hunnam.

Now Playing: DEATH BY LIGHTNING, starring Michael Shannon as James Abram Garfield and Matthew Macfadyen as his assassin, Charles Guiteau. Shea Whigham and Nick Offerman are in it. Thank God. Their participation should be an ironclad requirement of any drama set before the advent of the safety razor.

Today in "That's Our Todd": "Singer-songwriter Todd Snider was forced to cancel a performance scheduled this weekend in South Salt Lake after claiming he had been assaulted before the concert, and he was then arrested for allegedly causing a disturbance at the hospital where he was treated."

Now Playing: I LOVE L.A. The opening scene of Rachel Sennott riding her boyfriend in bed during an earthquake is recommended unreservedly to anyone who wants to see what it would look like if Elijah Wood and Pedro Pascal had a baby.

Now Playing: the new ROBIN HOOD series, with Sean Bean as the Sheriff of Nottingham. My big takeaway from the first half of the first episode: young women in the Middle Ages were horny as fuck.

Now Playing: STRANGER THINGS, Season 3. It took a few years, but I’m finally catching up in preparation for the fast-approaching series finale. I’m going to be needing a written explanation for why none of you told me that Maya Hawke’s hair and ice cream shop work uniform make her look like Tadzio.

Now Playing: the 1987 anime WICKED CITY. I haven’t watched this in decades. As I hit “play”, I thought to myself, “It’ll probably look normal now.” It is with no small amount of relief that I say, nope, we’re not quite there yet.

R.I.P. Peter Watkins. His 1971 PUNISHMENT PARK used to look like a vivid time capsule of the Nixon years. Now it’s like a vision of the (near-) future.

Nobody on TV gives better reaction shot than Kristin Scott Thomas. She’s the Baryshnikov, the Edward Hopper, the Ella Fitzgerald of hearing other people say stupid shit. By contrast, Ruth Bradley mostly holds up her end admirably, but with the blind enthusiasm of youth, she can sometimes overreach.

R.I.P. Prunella Scales, a wonderful actress and a gal who was comfortable living in the present. (Asked by a reporter if people still asked her about the TV sitcom she had starred in decades ago that is mentioned in the headline of every one of her obituaries, she said, “I love it when they don’t.”)

My hot take is that it is bad for the soul to have to listen to things described as either “beautiful” or “ugly” by a human parade balloon with the taste level of a goblin sleeping in a puddle of its own sick.

Now Playing: MR. SCORSESE. My new goal in life is to have once been married to the most beautiful woman alive and to become the subject of a five-hour documentary in which she marvels at the amount of physical destruction that could be caused by someone with such a “minuscule, asthmatic body.”
