Never been more like I am today. Journalist, photographer, Philadelphian. Editorial director at Technical.ly. Formerly Billy Penn at WHYY.
Excited for @freespeechproject.bsky.social's two-day event in Philadelphia — we had a prep call yesterday for my panel and whew, there is a lot to discuss

Former Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot’s advice to Philly Mayor @cherelleparker.bsky.social:

“Do everything you can to build up the well of goodwill now. This crisis is different than COVID... It’s not enough to just be anti-Trump. Articulate a vision.”

The art of coming up with these @semafor.com photo taglines (what's a better term?) taps that tabloid headline vein

The student who made SaveSEPTA.com received threats over it??

Hard times for early-stage startups. Only companies getting big bucks are AI darlings.

Guessing this is not our mayor

City of Philadelphia's not on here yet?

"While some might be inclined to blame the opioid crisis, experts say the homeless population is actually growing because of the affordable housing crisis."

This lede for an article about a robot designed for war performing a DJ set presents the reason journalists will not anytime soon be replaced by AI

“Nah, it really happened!” How do we know? “A reporter was there.”

Interesting new "news" site in Philadelphia: @phillyactivistnews.bsky.social. Not trying to hide anti-MAGA agenda, it's front and center. Kind of like @thebulwark.bsky.social

Not a fan of articles with no bylines though

No names on the site at all, so maybe it's fear of being targeted

Interesting to learn how the leaders at News Media Alliance rank US news pubs:
1) NYT
2) WSJ
3) Axios — but oops, they partnered with OpenAI

Still weird to me how siloed the startup community is — in Philly and most regions. Literally billions of dollars in economic activity general interest newsrooms almost never cover (including the one I used to run).

Wow. When I was a food + drink writer, American whiskey was the hottest thing out there. Not anymore!

Blame cannabis, a glut of product, and anti-drinking trends, per this story www.wsj.com/business/ame...

As @jasminemcnealy.com wrote in @niemanlab.org, this "dark patterns" practice (of which Billy Penn was surely guilty when I was there) puts news orgs in a category with scammers www.niemanlab.org/2024/12/publ...

Dang, the @inquirer.com hasn't implemented tech to let you cancel a subscription online? I've come to expect/allow that from small news startups, but surprised to find it at a touted digital success story like the Inky
