Preliminary data from @electricitymaps.com showing Aotearoa New Zealand running at 99% renewable as at 9am. Proving that when hydro output is strong, coal and gas aren't needed for firming. Wind and solar will only increase hydro storage by reducing its need, so lets get more of it in place.

the theme of the report is "Steep" - steep rises in clean tech, steep drops in fossil fuel. I mean, look at Pakistan here, that reversal is huge!

Loved this graph from the latest Ember report on electrification showing where countries sit on the "renewables/electrostate" scale. China a dominant electrostate, Mexico not far off (cool) but many western countries pushing their electricity sector hard but final demand sector not enough.

Always enjoy starting my day by checking in on the Peregrine chicks on @stalbanscathedral.bsky.social - glad to see they seem to be coping with the heat so far, the parents are doing great with feeding and keeping them cool.

Hey New Zealand! @ember-energy.org has a cool new tool that allows you to visualise electricity generation change. Remember how 2024 was a dry year for hydro and we had to import all that fossil fuel to fill the gap?

Imagine if there was a sun based source of electricity that we could have used!

Hey @ember-energy.org - loving the new look data explorer!

Looks like Spain's nuclear fleet is still offline with gas taking up the slack at the moment.

Africa will absolutely be the renewables powerhouse of next century. The question is, will it's citizens and governments have ownership of it's renewables industry or still rely on overseas companies who will take profit out of the continent?

In a world where we're told the political left and right are tribal and people don't change their views, just look at the swing back to Liberal support in Canada based on Trump. It's giving post WW2 'we're all in this together' vibes and will probably affect Canadian culture for years to come.

Every time I look at this graph I get a little angry. NZ is a country with brilliant electricity base load potential in geothermal and hydro, yet we STILL use coal and gas in the electricity mix. For no other reason than lagging policy.

The current wholesale energy price in Europe shows that until gas is fully out of the mix, or zonal pricing is implemented, consumers are unfairly targeted in energy bills. Note Spain in this graph, massively pushing renewables and prices trending down.

I took a look at #NZ #EV charging locations based on data from NZ Transport agency. Is there range anxiety in NZ? Probably for long journeys on the west coast. But more importantly, most chargers in the South Island are one space only. That needs to change fast! #NZRenewables

@electricitymaps.com - One of my fav things to do is watch your map slowly filling in as you add more zones! Thinking about how many low co2 grids in Africa are going to leapfrog fossil and stay green gives me excitement. Everyone else, check out the map! app.electricitymaps.com/zone/GB/72h

#NewZealand electricity grid is currently 99% renewable, which is pretty much as good as it gets due to co-generation from industry supplying the small remainder.

Will 2025 be the year NZ see’s it’s first 100% renewable generation month? Fossil Fuels are approaching historical lows at the back end of this year, mostly due to high hydro output, but solar and geothermal production in 2025 might give us our first renewable month - likely November 2025. #climate
