4. But that second indictment was never presented to or voted on by the grand jury

Instead, the foreperson and Halligan signed it, and it was handed up in open court.

The result is that the operative indictment in the Comey case is one that the grand jury did not actually vote on.

Criminal practitioners don’t astonish easily.

This is astonishing.
The facts are complicated, but here’s a summary of what appears to have happened based on the filings and today’s hearing:
NEWS: During a hearing in federal court in VA, prosecutors confirmed that the operative indictment in the case against James Comey was never shown to or voted on by the entire grand jury before it was presented in open court.

Defense counsel argued that’s a complete bar to further prosecution

Good morning! Texas is revising its K-12 social studies standards (TEKS) for 5.5 million kids, & the State Board of Education (SBOE) is meeting today to discuss their progress today. I will be live-tweeting (posting?) about anything that concerns social studies. Follow this thread for updates!

Florida’s laws allow open carry, permitless carry and “stand your ground” are a potentially deadly combination.

A historian points to a 31.6% increase in firearm homicides after the ‘stand your ground’ law passed in 2005.

Florida’s new open carry ruling combines with ‘stand your ground’ to create new freedoms – and new dangers
Evidence shows that 20 years on, Florida’s stand your ground law hasn’t made communities in the state any safer.

🙋🏻‍♀️ independent fact checker here!

Yes there are many freelance fact checkers and editors. But fact checking is not a priority for pubs. We were the first to be fired as the industry imploded

So there’s no desire to hire us, even independently

I work on books and am hired* paid directly by authors
Sort of a dumb question, but are there independent editors? Independent fact checkers?

And I get that the dollars (nonexistent) get split even more.

I know nothing about journalism other than as a consumer. Just wondering if theres a way to create collectives of independents with skills?
I worry about the emphasis on independent journalism we have right now because:

1) it’s not a sustainable business model to hold up an entire industry

2) they don’t have editors or fact checkers to provide checks and balances on their reporting

3) institutional journalism is still important

Whoa: A federal court just barred Texas from using its new congressional map, drawn by the GOP to target Dems.

"Substantial evidence shows that Texas racially gerrymandered the 2025 Map."

Court says the old map must be used in 2026. Appeals are certain. storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.us...

Also, only citizens can have voter registrations.
license plate data merged with credit header data, marriage records, vehicle ownership, and voter registrations, in one app for ICE agents. oh and it sends push notifications when someone they're seeking is nearby.

This thread. I think it's incredibly important to remember that the TERF fragility/rabidity started to take off right around the height of me too, and the main message they had was "men are inherently violent."

They targeted trans WOMEN, while at the same time excusing actual violence from cis men.
MeToo was intentionally co-opted by the type of 'feminist' that berates and abuses people for not conforming to gender, while insisting that a uterus makes a woman...

1/2
This idea that #metoo was a temporary piece of insanity that happened because America was too woke...

Fuck you. It was a temporary moment in time when people decided, for the first time, that 20 women were finally equal to one man.

The tribune of the poor, the downtrodden? Studies clearly indicate that Trump’s most ardent supporters, especially in poorer areas, are, by local standards, quite wealthy / financially stable. Economic anxieties are mostly downstream from anxieties over racial and cultural status.
