finally got my custom plates from the fabrication people (after paying import fees, so, even more expensive than expected) and threw this together to test it out… so far so good!

guess I gotta finish making something to put this in (after I handwire the switches and program the mc)

this probably doesn’t look substantially different from whatever I last showed, but: rail and rod has been dry fit into the new cyberdeck print, and the new innards has all the heat inserts allowing me to screw it into the case and mount the keyboard

just need to finish the face, then electronics

got some lora/meshtastic things from lilygo to start playing with (still waiting on my heltec order, eta monday)

back on the printing grind, hopefully this newest revision of my deck insert actually works this time (unlike the previous three)

still waiting on a heltec v3 before I can fully finish the faceplate though - maybe I'll just print one without it just so I can somewhat finish a thing...

project(s) status: bunch of things i need to solder but solder workbench is too cluttered to actually use and i have yet to force myself to sort that out

also need to rework some of the aluminum parts for the deck assembly, but we got so much snow here lately that my shop is basically inaccessible

done a little desk reorg, including adding a kvm switch to my stack so now I can easily switch between my linux minipc (daily driving) and my windows pc (gaming)

combined with syncthing/my nas (also firefox sync ig) its fairly seamless to switch between the two and pick up whatever I was doing

just finished Thank Goodness You’re Here! which was a true delight, highly recommend

missed 8 hidden achievements on my first playthrough, but I’ll definitely play through that again at some point and try to pick those up

I will probably break this but heck, let’s see if I can install kde manually

oh hello delivery driver, and hello risc-v mainboard… time to play
February 14, 2025 at 10:06 PM
like many, steam deck/steamos changed my views on linux - before that, I just didn't think it would ever properly fit my needs (outside of niche uses like raspberry pi os)

I subsequently tried installing arch on a pc, but when I tried installing nvidia drivers, I completely broke the install 1/14

yeah so I actually don’t know which of the blackberry keyboard’s keys are mapped to ctrl so I can’t ctrl-c cmatrix without a usb keyboard plugged in, please send help
or I can reboot in cli and run cmatrix, basically a hacker now
February 14, 2025 at 1:51 AM
picked up a hackberry when they went up on elecrow because they weren’t too expensive/I’m a consumerist whore and I wanted to play with it

it’s actually nicer in person than I expected, case print quality is superb, screen is sharp, keyboard great as expected

pi02 inside but otherwise I like it!

my risc-v framework stuff is out for delivery today (despite the region being hammered by snow, so I wouldn’t be surprised if it doesn’t show) but frustratingly it has beaten the delivery of the lora/meshtastic stuff I’m waiting on to finish my first deck

caught between projects once again

anyway, I can get a cool anodized aluminum or brushed bronze switch plate for this project if I want which is cool, but it's like 35 to 40 freedom dollars for a single plate, which is... a bit more than I'd like to spend

it's ~half that per unit if I get 10+, but... I do not require 10+

I had to import my generated svg into fusion 360 to export a step file for that, because the form didn't accept stl (which I get from tinkercad)

tinkercad imports svg no problem, fusion 360 gave me some weird tiny version - after researching I found this thread, need to scale by 3.779528

dumb
Fusion's stupid treatment of SVG files
I’ve been messing around with Fusion 360 (version 2.0.12392) lately and, for the most part really like it. However, Fusion’s brain dead treatment of inserted SVG files has me stunned. Three things a...

so the 60% keyboard I designed for this writerdeck is just big enough that printing it on my a1 mini would really suck, the spacebar makes it so that I'd basically have to print the plate in 3 pieces

started playing with a sheet metal cutting quote tool on one of those pcb sites and... tempting
February 12, 2025 at 4:33 PM
why did I just spend hours modelling a commodore 64-like writerdeck that's too large for me to print? guess this will sit uselessly on my digital shelf until I maybe buy a creality k2 plus because I cannot be arsed to splice this into parts in such a way that it can be easily reassembled

tragedy: after printing a revision which looked incredible, finally realized that the panel mount cables are so chunky that they can’t bend enough to fit the actual height clearance of my case

have to either redesign everything or do surgery on the bend protector part and try and force it
gonna need a small revision but, for a first pass, my deck’s mount panel for io came out pretty good

slowly dialing in the innards for the cyberdeck, figuring out where I want to mount things and if/how they'll fit

just figured out the most compact way I can cram in the battery I chose for this in such a way that I can also put in this power switch and make the charging port accessible, I think

soldered the skelett 40 pcb, typing to you from it now

the soldering itself went well, though I did place one switch slightly off to the left by 0.25u, whoops... I can deal with that, since my keycaps aren't quite right anyway

learning to type on a 40% board with layers is hurting my brains
February 8, 2025 at 8:56 PM
the stabs I needed are here so now I have no excuse not to sit down and solder this keyboard pcb

not, like, today - tomorrow though, future me should definitely do that

debating buying one of framework/deepcomputing’s new risc-v mainboards to tinker with, maybe slap in a cyberdeck… do I need this? no, but would it be cool to play with? hopefully

...yes
