Today marks 85 years since the end of the Finnish Winter War. Peace was a relief, but its conditions were terrible. The nation survived, but the veterans paid for it with their lives. Ukraine is now in the same situation.

Old forests in their natural state are already rare. Only 3% of the forests in southern Finland are old. Biodiversity is decreasing and many species are disappearing. Organisms that rely on decaying wood are particularly at risk.

How much snow does it get in southern Finland in winter? None, just a little or more than a meter. The climate is changing and extreme conditions are becoming more common.
