Ed tears his eyes away from Stede’s ass. Be respectful, he chides himself - and his dick. “Nah. Nice to have someone new around.” He looks up at the villa, which is way too big for one person, but hey, who is Ed Single as the Day is Long Teach to judge? He remembers what Auntie said. “S’long as you don’t want a homeowners’ association, that is.” Stede looks back at him uneasily. “No, no, quite the opposite!” he says in a high-pitched voice. The paintbrush clatters to the ground again. “I mean, um, no, thank you. I just ran as far as I could from covenants and residents’ society once my divorce finalized.” Interesting. “Auntie will be happy, then,” says Ed. “She’s cool, as long as you don’t cross her. She lives two doors down, next to Buttons.” “Oh!” says Stede. “I’ve met Mr. Buttons. Bit of an odd bird, isn’t he? First time I met him, he was nude!” Ed bites his bottom lip, trying not to laugh at Stede’s cute, scrunched up face. “Yep. He does that a lot. Used to just be around the full moon but now you can’t really predict when you’re gonna get a show.” He suddenly remembers - “Oh, hey, I saw you out walking last night. Did you see anything weird -” Something comes barreling around the side of the house. Ed has barely two seconds to register that it’s small and white and yipping before it slams into his legs, and nearly knocks him over. Well, it does knock him over, actually, but someone - Stede - catches him. Is Ed swooning? Maybe, possibly, hard to say when there’s a little furry thing trying to scrabble up his legs. Stede’s hands are strong. “Who’s this?” he laughs. Stede helps Ed steady himself, then shakes a finger at the adorable, fluffy white dog bouncing around their feet. “Fern Daffodil Bonnet, I told you to be polite to our new neighbors,” he scolds.
