Trauma, in some cases, can be like Ellen’s curse, it spreads, it festers, & if left unaddressed, it continues its cycle of destruction. The film also explores themes of consent, the mental & medical treatment of women, female sexuality, sin, & sexual desire being sinful-all staples of vampire lore.

There’s a moment in the film where Ellen realizes she does not need salvation, because she has done nothing wrong. All she has ever been is herself. In that moment, she understands that the shame was never hers to bear. And yet, she alone has the power to end its hold over her.

Nosferatu is an abuser, preying innocent, taking what he wants, leaving behind a stain that feels inescapable. A plague, consumes, manipulates & lingers long after the act itself. The burden of trauma is suffocating, you blame yourself, others blame you, society shames, & no one seems to understand.
