DMs welcome about election processes. Happy to clarify how things work and educate.
Not if they aren't in the 7th and act like assholes to the election staff.

Anyone reading this in Nashville ....
Just make sure you're actually in district 7 and don't show up to early voting acting like a jerk when you can't vote because you're in 5 or 6. Ask how I know .... 🙄
People are idiots. Aftyn is not. 🤣

I'm so bad at assuming that certain things are just common knowledge until I'm reminded that American history \ american immigrant history \ Louisiana history isn't everyone's hyperfocus lol

Did that help? Sure. But I also know it doesn't happen w/out the diplomatic crisis. It was political as shit w/ Harrison trying to get elected 3 weeks later & was trying to use it to get votes. Without the anniversary there still would've been a day we just may have gotten a better representative.

1892 was the year after the lynchings in 1891. It was also the year that Columbus Day was implemented as a response to the lynchings.

Its wholly unfair to say they embraced columbus when nobody was talking about him at all much less talking about the atrocities he committed in 1892.

That's fair. Create a holiday for him then. Columbus day was never meant to be abt Columbus & people have forgotten what it was about. I had Sicilian family in NO at the time. The whole structure was supposed to be a fight against Xenophobia and its literally been allowed to become the opposite.

Fuck Columbus but also, for left leaning folks of Italian Am. descent, esp. those of us who know the story & had family in New Orleans in 1891 the entire country overlooking the day being a response to the US' xenophobic stance on Italian Americans in the late 19th century is frustrating as hell.

We hold the history that people like you don't gaf about.

The Bank of italy started in 1904 by Giannini. The San Francisco fire in 1906 is what gave it the push it needed to become the bank it did. It was renamed in 1930.

The first Columbus day was in 1892. Nice try though.

Columbus Day and its ‘Mafia’ origins
Like America’s other urban centers, street gangs of thieves and ruffians were a common element in the New Orleans underworld. The influx of Italian immigrants added another ethnicity into the mix.

Just say you like being ignorant and save everyone the time.

Its not abt Columbus. Give me Yogi Berra or Chef Boyardee or Frank Sinatra or Joe Pesci or Robert DeNiro day. I don't particularly care, just give the meaning back and stop talking about Columbus. And if that means the day finds its way into obscurity? Fine. Better than the politicization of it now.

It was supposed to be an apology to Italy w/ a $25k payment. Instead, a grassroots effort was est. & the day made federal in '71. If your family was from NO & have the names Macheca, Marchesi, Bagnetto, Caruso, Comitis, Geraci, Romero, Scaffidi, Traina, Monasterio, or Polizzi you're likely connected

Columbus day was supposed to be a one time event but Italian Americans liked having a day to rally around. All of the statues were put up by Italian American societies to fight against the Xenophobia & the proliferation of mafia rumors being spread aimed @ Sicilian communities.

And for anyone that's missed this episode, the Canterbury Church is doing an art installation where they've put up "graffiti" in the form of removable stickers.

The fuckery and audacity of these people. FAUX OUTRAGE.
