#Medievalsky #BookHistory hive mind, are there any in-depth palaeographical studies, from any tradition, on the hands of individual scribes/copyists? Grateful for all recommendations!

Temperatures are dropping, but nature's beauty doesn't stop to impress. Took this photo on my way to work this morning.

Next week, I'll be giving a paper on an interesting Syro-Arabic text I recently found and edited. During the event, selected passages will be read in English translation. If you would like to participate, here's the registration link:

Currently compiling a glossary for a short Arabic text translated from Syriac. Although they can be crucial research instruments, glossaries are often missing from eds. Probably because it takes so much time to compile them. I needed 2 hours for those 5 lines of Arabic text.

This is a detail of a braided pattern decoration in a Christian Arabic codex from the 9th/10th century CE (Sinai Ar. 461, f. 25br). I only recently noticed that the scribe used five differently coloured inks for this. It's just stunning how vibrant they still are after more than a millennium.

Here's the link to the digitised manuscript. It also has some parts in Greek written in Syriac script (see image below).

Mind-numbing how many layers of history there can be to a single manuscript page: Syriac upper text (10th c.), Armenian undertext (pre-10th c.), Arabic material used for binding (11-12th c.?), Coptic foliation in the margin (date?), modern foliation at the bottom.
