I find that a specious distinction to draw as there’s no commercial incentive for clubs to play elsewhere in the country, which is why they want to do this. As for the tenor of the debate, you described it as a grim prospect…

As I say, European superiority complex. Happy enough for the rest of the world to spend their money on our product but not to export it.

This is why I mainly follow non-league these days. The football may be crap but teams still have a soul and local identity.

Multi-club groups (including across different sports) already abound and fans seem to enjoy the other benefits the financial model brings e.g. economic might, prestige and sporting success.

Why is it a grim prospect? Clubs have spent years cultivating global fan bases; what makes those fans any less worthy of seeing teams in the flesh other than a European superiority complex? Geography ceased to matter to big five clubs years ago.
