Thoracic pathologist, with a focus on ILD and transplant. Dad of 2 👱👱 (03/18, 08/21). Bakes bread 🍞. Cares for a garden 🌻. Bikes to work 🚲. Biodiversity enthusiast. Mainly thinking about lichens here.
Tonight I tried to replicate the "on-slide" test for usnic acid published by B. McCune 2024 with adaptations. Results look promising - further evaluation is necessary. #lichen

E. prunastri has a strong red reaction. Probably second compound reacting brown?

P. grisea is negative.

Flavoplaca citrina agg. #lichen - I think - on siliceous rock (ballast from rarely used industrial railway).

From a different playground...

Fossils and #lichen on a Hannover playground. I think this is likely Protoblastenia rupestris and Polyozosia albescens.

Mature and immature spores of the #lichen Amandinea punctata.

Please take these of Gyalecta nidarosiensis.

Jamesiella anastomosans is one of my current #lichen favorites!
October 31, 2025 at 5:50 PM
Paraphyes are strongly coherent and become free on K. Branched and sometimes (probably) anastomosing.

To the side I found one structure which might be a pycnidium with filiform conidia and one single spore, slightly bend and not attributable to the lichen with confidence... 3/4

I was not able to find asci in multiple apothecia. Going via exclusion I have tendencies towards M. peliocarpa.

Apothecia are dark coloured, blue-greenish on K and red on C. (cinereorufa-green? and gyrophoric acid).

I have a mystery #lichen I've been working on for the last 3 days and would love some input on.

Its on unshaded mineral rich soil between Baeomyces rufus (sterile) and early colonizer moss on the edge of a earth heap.
Small black apothecia on brown thallus. I am thinking Micarea sp.; however... 1/4

We have this nice bubble bath toy. Unfortunately it stopped working and the screws seem to cemented in. I cannot open it 😭.

Vezdaea leprosa (so I was told) #lichen from soil between ballast on a rarely used industrial railway track.
October 29, 2025 at 11:03 AM
Developing stain with Lugol's. Hemiamyloid reaction in the hymenium - light blue turning reddish.
October 28, 2025 at 10:49 PM
Arthonia radiata #lichen - a typical early colonizer on a small twig of acer sp.

I re-printed the ballstage base in TPU. PLA on PLA was too slippery. Also I bought some lead balls for ballast. The prototype is filled with sand which sometimes does not shift and the stage stays unstable.

Eventually I want to cover the base in cork to pin samples.

A prototype for a 3d printed ball stage for the stereomicroscope. Turned out larger than I expected it to be - does not run as smoothly as the commercial one - but I'm happy for the first try. It rotates around a centre 15 mm above the plate

Some technicalities. I had good experience with Olympus compatible c-mount camera adapters from China/Aliexpress to build up confidence in "third party" optics.

Now I have tried new eyepieces for my stereo microscope. A pair of 10x/25 to replace my 10x/22. These work well*

Details of hymenium with spores, apothecial margin and photobiont in the granular thallus.
October 18, 2025 at 9:21 PM
Microchemical reaction to C+ (positive, red and very fast)
I like to do them on camera and take pictures with a foot pedal (or take a movie).
October 18, 2025 at 9:21 PM
Placynthiella dasaea #lichen (I think). On lignum (broken fence in an old garden). In contrast to P. icmalea with soredia.
October 18, 2025 at 9:21 PM
Agonimia tristicula #lichen on bryophytes over hard limestone.
I still have to find this one with perithecia, my sample is unfortunately sterile.

Microscopy details.

Lecidea grisella #lichen on vertical surface of a playground wall.
October 16, 2025 at 7:02 PM
The spores are a bit too small for L. erysibe so I will look into this again. I'd be happy to hear your thoughts.
October 13, 2025 at 9:08 PM
I think this is Lecania erysibe #lichen on a limestone boulder.
Some small yellow nightmare parasitizes on the green blastidiate crust (however I have not collected this one yet).
