Big thanks to St Petrock's Housing team, who've just accommodated 3 people who were sleeping rough on #Exeter's streets. So grateful for the caring, courageous and fun team I have the joy to lead.

This is very good news! For too long landlords have charged excessive rent up front to circumvent deposit rules.
The days of landlords demanding extortionate amounts of rent in advance from prospective renters will soon be over.

Our Renters Rights Bill, which has its final stages in the commons today, will cap rent in advance payments to a maximum of one month.

So it's Christmas Eve. I'm looking forward to time off, time with my family, time to remember that God chose to become a person like us.
But for those who are #homeless, #ChristmasDay is just another day to survive.
But St Petrock's will be open serving Christmas dinner.

And many of these children in Temporary Accommodation will end up disadvantaged for life, especially if "temporary" ends up being many months. And so the cycle of homelessness and social inequality rolls on...
Absolutely shocking 40,000 increase in children in TA in two years from 2022-24. We need more social homes and a welfare system that covers the cost of rent

This is such a glaring, stupid policy failure with outcomes that are both cruel and costly - it's great to see coverage in the mainstream press.
Current "move on periods" directly lead to homelessness for refugees . Recently the government announced that it would avoid making people homeless for a maximum of three additional days when Severe Weather Emergency Protocols are activated, but it isn't enough.

As our Winter Appeal hits £1million, we turn the spotlight on an official policy that’s making newly recognised refugees homeless

Death statistic for #homeless people are terrifying.
741 homeless people died in 2021
35% of deaths were due to drug poisoning
13.4% suicide (<1% in general pop.)
9.6% alcohol-related

So well over half homeless deaths are so-called deaths by despair.

I'm definitely a procaffeinator. It's dangerous for me to do anything (other than put on the coffee machine) until sufficiently caffeinated.
Word of this morning is ‘procaffeinate’: to put everything on hold until you’ve had sufficient amounts of coffee.

Yep. Definitely. Struggling to find homelessness peeps here so far!
Starter packs I need:

Recovery
Therapists who understand trauma and justice
Homelessness policy/arts/writing
Homelessness grassroots
Journalists we trust and will work with

I might make these but I'm working on MoH's strategic plan today with @mattturtle.bsky.social
