So I find it feels less like a random collection of StackOverflow answers cut and pasted in like early copilot did.

I’ve got a pre-prompt to force it to avoid some bad habits I dislike too. All seems to help.

Same three.

I’d heard about that one. I agree that sometimes it can waste time going down rabbit holes but on the whole I find it quite handy and helpful.

As for maintability the newer stuff that works within you IDE changes (I use Cursor) that as it’s aware of your code style

The shop assistants I mentioned are sometimes wrong “it should be here somewhere” but asking them is quicker more often than not especially if they have additional information or context “no those don’t go on sale until Tuesday, sorry” and I can quickly work out if they can help or not and move on

Well then we are in a “your mileage may vary” situation.

I and others get a great benefit out of it while being aware to take some of what it says with a pinch of salt.

If I use it in a critical area I ensure it’s one I have some knowledge in to sanity check it. For trivial stuff Im more loose.

So (and I’m trying to be open handed here) is the eco damage your main reason for disliking AI?

I’m saying I find it useful. You say it sounds like a search engine (which we both find useful). We can all choose what we want to use and I’ll take it from your stance that you won’t be using it?

“But after looking at the data on individual use of LLMs, I have stopped worrying about it and I think you should too.”

The author is arguing that we shouldn’t worry about the environmental costs in the grand scheme of things when compared to other things we do to a point.

From the post you linked to that you got those numbers from:

“My sense is that a lot of climate-conscious people feel guilty about using ChatGPT. In fact it goes further: I think many people judge others for using it, because of the perceived environmental impact.”

And…

I treat it more as like a shop assistant “can you point me in the direction of x?” And it’s pretty good at getting you there abouts but not 100% if the time (like some shop assistants).

I wouldn’t use it to diagnose cancer by me just asking it from home though!

Useful up to a point.

Yep. Agree with all that. As a coder I fear I’m losing the little bits of knowledge and muscle memory from coding all day but the speed of which I can have a thought and then a solution by using AI is jaw dropping (and yes you need the experience to know when it’s getting it wrong). A good fit!

Epic either way.

Why seek political office if you have a stonking majority and you use it to…endlessly fret about losing your majority rather than running a country? It’s no good. There is no theory for how to make things better. It’s not even well managed decline.
