L.A. city officials have made it impossible to accurately track homelessness spending, in large part by outsourcing to an agency that has failed to collect accurate data on its vendors and hold them accountable, according to findings from an independent audit commissioned by a federal judge. The problems heighten the risk of tax dollars being misspent, auditors found after reviewing $2.4 billion in city funding. The draft audit report, released Thursday by U.S. District Judge David O. Carter, comes as Los Angeles City Council members weigh an overhaul of homelessness spending. Paying vendors through LAHSA (Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority - the government agency, overseen by the city and county, that for decades L.A. mayors and council members have outsourced management of much of the city’s homelessness dollars for sheltering, feeding and serving people), Raman added, has meant that at “the city, we don't have information that we need in order to make sure these dollars are being spent well, and that people on the streets are getting the help that they need.” Councilmember Bob Blumenfield said the audit documents “the same frustrations that I have had with the complexity and opaqueness into how the city funds homeless services." “The fragmentation of the system makes it difficult for the City to follow the money and the lack of direct control over the homeless contracts and data exacerbates the problem,” he added.

From Havre Daily News: Baer [a longtime attorney and district court judge from North Dakota] said he only saw the officers question himself and others near him, but they were on the train nearly the entire time it was at the station, so, although he does not know for sure, it is his presumption that the officers went through the entire train and asked all passengers about their U.S. citizenship status. He said they didn’t ask for documentation of his citizenship and moved on once he said he was a citizen. “They took my word for it,” Baer said. “I presume if my skin was a little darker I might have had to come up with some documentation, but that’s only my own guess.” This is not the first time issues of citizenship have arisen in Havre in Department of Homeland Security actions.

I'm deeply concerned about the erosion of due process and the safety of our community members in Minneapolis, and see that the whole country is applauding Senator Chris Van Hollen for the visibility and pressure he's generating for Kilmar Abrego Garcia and others wrongfully kidnapped and imprisoned at CECOT in El Salvador. I also see that in Florida, a US citizen Juan Carlos Lopez-Gomez was released this week from his own unlawful detainment after immediate public outcry. Seeing this, while our federal representatives are here on recess, it seems like the least they could do is to come to a jail in their own state and advocate against the wrongful and willful detainment of one of our own. We absolutely cannot let these cases of a marginalized person being charged with nonsense and deprived of their constitutional rights stand and become a precedent. Each instance must be challenged forcefully and shown as the farce and threat to our democracy that it is. I encourage you, Rep Noor, and Senator Clark to go yourselves to the Sherburne County jail and put the pressure on, and for you all to do everything you can to make sure our federal reps also show up.

Attorney Hannah Brown revealed the Department of Homeland Security added a charge Monday from the section of immigration law that covers "endangering public safety or national security." Judge Sarah Mazzie admitted she's never seen the charge encompass a drunk driving case before. Gunaydin pleaded guilty to DWI last year, after his blood alcohol level was over twice the legal limit when arrested driving downtown in 2023.
