Now I understand how benign things, like sitting on the “wrong” side of the bus or drinking from the “wrong” water fountain, can be regarded as profound acts of protest.

It’s precisely because the status quo is doing nothing; and any minor, but courageous, act of defiance will upset everything.

Also, in the list on absurd things, why hide the signage of businesses? What will that accomplish, exactly, the days a game is taking place?

These rules seem absurd, specially in a city already known for absurd rules.
