Kudos to the Australian National Environmental Science Program (NESP2)-Climate Systems Hub and CSIRO for being so committed to building a long-term working relationship between Western science and First Nations knowledge.

Comparing the results with the Gross Primary Production estimates from biospheric models (e.g., Dynamic Global Vegetation Models), the study concludes that the modelled GPP in Northern Hemisphere ecosystems needs to be higher to match the increasing seasonal variations in atmospheric CO2.

It also shows that the increase in CO2 uptake is almost proportional to the increase in atmospheric CO2, further cementing this process as the key driver for the role of terrestrial ecosystems in slowing down global warming.

Drought and associated wildfires are the main reasons for the decline.
Although there is no implication that this is a permanent shift, six years of decline are long enough to warrant concern beyond the possibility that natural climate variability is responsible for the shift.

Should we call it forest loss while comparing to other drivers such as permanent deforestation? Although some burned forests might be converted to pastures, most will recover or be a degraded forest for a while. I realize it is commonly used to call it loss.

And 1991 was the Pinatubo eruption, also well studied for cooling off the planet.

Great achievement to see such a powerhouse in accounting methods, data collection, modeling capabilities, & most importantly, a vibrant and smart research community ready to play a big role in tracking and supporting China's progress towards decarbonization and the net-zero target
