The HB 2015 amendment, sponsored by Senator Yasmin Trudeau, would ensure that a small portion of those grants goes toward public defense in the same communities receiving the law enforcement funds. This is a basic measure of fairness and accountability.

By not applying this legislation retroactively, the Legislature unfairly left up to 856 currently incarcerated people behind — serving a sentence length they might not receive under the updated guidelines used today. HB 1274 fixes that
