If you read carefully, I never suggested "zero punishment". Also I'm faaaairly sure some things have been learned about "an eye for an eye" or something, but to each his own I guess.

I also think taking away everything they gained is a certain amount of disincentive: why do all the crime if you get nothing at the end? But I see your point; I'm just sort of weary of a punishment-focused justice system.

I mean, it depends on what you want the goal of incarceration,etc. to be.

Traditionally I think it's two-fold: prevent harm to society, disincentivize others from doing the crime.

Lately I've been more drawn to the former with all the terrible already happening, so I'd probably settle for that.
