Other than the witch-hazel flowers were few but we caught some nice fungi on fallen trees. The we headed home to chop some wood as the temperatures plunge tonight 5/n

We had lunch at the confluence--always an excellent spot. After the first third of the hike we literally saw no one--in contrast to last weekend at Occaneechee 4/n

It was LOVELY in Piedmont NC today--Minnesota summer temps--and we went on a quest to find witch-hazel in bloom. We headed to TNC's White Pines Preserve where we've see it before--the fall foliage was 🔥 1/n

Good words from one of my favorite authors--you may know Charlotte's Web or Stuart Little, which are masterpieces, but his essays and commentaries are as good or better, and he was a champion of the common good

UNC student groups are taking the lead as faculty leadership falters. I'll be speaking, representing @unc-ch-aaup.bsky.social at today's rally, and then we'll head over to the Faculty Council meeting to demand that they pass a resolution rejecting Trump's compact, as our peer universities have done

The show was just up the road for us at the Haw River Ballroom in Saxapahaw. It was a packed house and those three are consummate performers. The evening was, in part, a benefit for @nature.org 2/n

Fall color is peaking across Piedmont NC. I love that about our home as it also lasts for months-we'll still have color from oaks in early December. This is a taste of it from our driveway. Lots of folks were out looking-at Occoneechee Mountain State Natural Area the parking lot reached capacity
