Just for putting things in perspective. Last year at the COP29,developed countries committed to mobilising $300 billion annually by 2035 to support developing nations climate mitigation and adaptation efforts. In one year, the US defence budget tripled the climate finance goal agreed at the COP29.

This paper, published in the last issue of the npj climate action of Nature Magazine, is key to understanding the current discussion and obstacles that Parties are having for achieving an agreement at COP29. Many thanks, Andreas Sieber and Iskander Erzini Vernoit, for this clarifying piece.

1/ The latest draft for the New Collective Quantified Goal (NCQG) on climate finance shows progress but still having major disagreements. While all agree finance must scale up, the amount and how to deliver it are intensely debated. 🧵

Not exactly the reading for a lawyer, but this is what happens when you work with scientists and engineers.

When Biden was on the race, Carbon Brief shared this projection on US emissions depending on the elections winner. Bad.

The UNEP Emissions Gap Report 2024 highlights a critical funding gap for decarbonization, especially in developing regions.
An annual investment of $9,105 billion is needed to reach a 1.5 trajectory, but in 2021-2022, only $1,150 billion was invested.

Good news. It's crucial to integrate just transition measures throughout the entire process. Without them, the risk of social exclusion is high, which could lead to a loss of public support for climate policies.

The @newclimate.bsky.social published a report projecting the emissions of the top 25 most emmiter countries. Below the figure with the analysis of each one. Excellent contribution.

The debate around carbon removals and overshooting is getting more traction every day. Allocation of responsibilities, feasibility of solutions, and the effectiveness of removals in a 1.5 (or more) planet are some of the key aspects to consider. Here Nature Editorial on the topic this week 👇

Research demonstrates that the land managed by indigenous communities in the Amazon has a notably less deforestation rate. Indigenous people protect our planet and biodiversity. It is urgent to protect them as well.

This would mean a victory for Trump for climate change. 4 billion tons of emissions by 2030. Although a Democratic government requires raising ambition and thoroughly implementing the Inflation Reduction Act, the difference with a Trump government is unquestionable. Go Kamala!

Here, the text agreed at the TC5 of the Loss and Damage Fund.No mention to the equity principle nor human rights. It assures the world bank as the host of the Fund. A very distant model than the one thought by developing nations when started pushing the need for a L&D Fund.
