Officials from MassDOT presented two primary concepts this week for replacing the Beades Bridge on Morrissey Boulevard: a modern movable drawbridge or a taller, fixed bridge that would no longer open for boat traffic. #Dorchester

On the 252nd anniversary of the Boston Tea Party, demonstrators retraced the historic march from Old South to the Boston harbor tonight and dumped ice into Boston Harbor, declaring: No Kings, No Tariffs, No ICE.

I would never take upper Morrissey except that’s my easiest path to an onramp for 93N! It’s that or literally take 93S a couple of exits and then get back on northbound! I don’t even commute that way, just like on weekends. And obviously, it’s already Lake Morrissey during king tides!

This project is hilarious. Attendees included TWO yacht club commodores, a bunch of Savin Hill cranks (I say with love), bike geeks, downtown car commuters, a roving engineer, Frank Baker, and one person at the end who asked, Why not let this bridge fall into the sea?? (It wasn’t me!)

The new Fields Corner library branch that is rising at the corner of Park Street and Dot Ave with a completion expected by next summer has an important design distinction that is readily apparent to passersby: glulams, or engineered wood, instead of steel beams.

With the green line closure, tons of people have shifted to the orange line to get to the Back Bay. This means tons of people walking through the Copley Place/Prudential complex to get to Boylston and Newbury Sts., because it’s fucken cold out and also the WIMDIEST neighborhood in the city.

Boston should be one of the most livable cities on the planet. But every decision still gets routed through defensive, “how long have you lived here?” parking-first politics. One day I hope we get leadership willing to break that cycle instead of treating the status quo as a political safety jacket.

They did one of these near me (it was a double lot, so ended up with 2 rows of townhouses = 10 units), and it came out fine. The abutters’ complaints as reported sound like they’re convinced a 3-bedroom unit is always 3 drunken college kids, rather than like, one nice boring couple with 2 kids.

On this one of the coldest days of the winter so far, I have spent all day with one sinus draining prodigious amounts of snot, while the other is completely dry. Although that is presumably half the snot, it is not half as annoying.

I assume this is divine will or convergent evolution rather than intentional breeding, but it turns out that hass avocados fit perfectly into traditional-sized muffin tins. Not that I’ve ever bought six avocadoes at a time, but if I did, I’d be prepared!

Earlier this evening I came outside near DTX into the middle of an incredible snow squall: tiny, hard stinging pellets of snow, being whipped in all directions between the buildings. It passed quickly (though the wind hasn’t). Closed the last storm window just now as it’ll be 10F tonight.

I am presently trapped on a Green Line train, for the second morning in a row, behind a Riverside train that’s gone haywire between Boylston and Copley. I’ve now been waiting long enough that I could have walked to my destination Instead of take the Green Line at all. Good morning!

I’m a little puzzled by this essay: it says a lot of nice things but doesn’t say firmly “No, actually, the DCR plan won’t work” or “No, we don’t need traffic THROUGH the waterfront, just TO it.” Honestly, just say whether you prioritize cars or not!
Opinion— Kevin Deabler, co-founder of RODE Architects, says we need to think about much more than traffic when designing Dorchester's infrastructure of the future, particularly along the coast.

Things I learn at my job: Did you know you can bulk buy oyster forks from W. B. Mason? Oyster forks are the teeny 3-tined ones that absolutely nobody uses for oysters since at least 1961, but they might be good for dainty desserts I guess.

Remind me again why DCR is planning to spend a ton of money to improve car traffic flow in this area? When the right answer is to return it to nature and let the marsh protect us from rising waters.

In this our open enrollment period, I have just found out that you can use your health care FSA on a mattress, up to $800 every 10 years. (!!) Also tampons, mileage to/from medical appointments, orthopedic shoes (limited), radon test kits! Sunscreen over SPF 15!

Over the weekend was the anniversary of the Cocoanut Grove Fire, still the biggest in Mass. with 492 deaths. (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cocoanu...). You look at the pictures on Wikipedia and you’re like, 500 people, where did they all fit? Well, the basement, but also, occupancy rules exist for a reason

Pero qué locura: assessment of an Iberia flight attendant in line with me late in Black Friday afternoon. (I recognized her accent and chatted her up, clumsily.) I didn’t have the heart to tell her it was actually pretty mild, and TJ Maxx is always like that.

I won the fight with my optometrist‘s office and did not have to do the puff test. They did dilate my eyes, though, which is to say, I will be looking (and I guess acting) like Gollum for the rest of the afternoon. Leftover pie is my consolation. My precious, if you will.

Poor transport hacks: it didn’t fit into the grocery bag I’d intended to use, so I cat around and found a Chewy box I’ve been using for recycling and cleared that out. With some kitchen towels for padding, into the box, seatbelted into the front seat, the pie arrived at its destination safely.

Pie is in the oven, exiting ~10:15. Then it has to cool enough to be transported safely 30 minutes in the car. Arrival at final location = ??
