The corridor is empty when I finally take my first step out of the room, on my own, and the sunlight pours in through the glass windows that line the walls. They look out onto the courtyard, where tall trees bloom in pinks and whites, and flowering bushes are painted in blues and purples. Afternoon is drawing in, turning the sky a vibrant salmon, and fluffy white clouds roll across it in broken pieces. The edges of the windows are stained in faded colour, paintings of flowers and plants that decorate the courtyard below, and when the sun catches them they glitter as if outlined with gold. It takes my breath away, and I inhale deeply, the fresh scent of grass filling my lungs.

He asks, and I mentally kick myself for telling him before knowing who he was. "We have stables if you'd like to see our horses. Do you know how to ride? I can teach you, if you want. Not today, unless you want to, but if not maybe another." Masahiko speaks fast, his porcelain hand waving as he dismisses his own ideas.
