In theory, we should prefer the latter. The role of government should be the "big thing" that can impose checks on other "big things" like corporations on behalf of us "little things" that come together to form it.

It’s not like any of us is safe from the brain wash the U.S. gov sells us every day . With ticktock we at least became aware of it and started a community and businesses that were free of dammed investors.
