I remember seeing Rumble in the Bronx for my friend's birthday in 1996, and feeling like that was the future of cinema (his older brother had bootlegs of Drunken Master and some other older Chan movies, as well) - The Matrix was important, but Jackie Chan (and others) were already here.

And Jackie Chan was a big American star by this point (Rush Hour was also 98) - you could find basically all of his movies on VHS in the average drug store. That's not even counting stuff like Kung Fu: The Legend Continues running in syndication (and Xena was at least adjacent in fighting style).

Yeah, historically, AOC is the only one that stuck it out (Bowman and Cori Bush both got primaried out later), and Ruben Gallego pushed out Sinema ahead of time (probably a case for Mamdani as well). They are getting bolder, but haven’t hit full Tea Party “Throw ‘Em All Out!” yet.
