Doctors, esp. journal editors, have a moral responsibility to stop publishing causal yet disculpatory language like "may not be as harmless as commonly assumed." or "could cause harm" Learn the basics about causal inference and write conclusions proportionate with the quality of the design. End rant

For all I can tell, the study only shows that people with severe insomnia have a higher rate of heart failure, full stop. Matching or controls doesn't solve the problem here, esp because taking melatonin is voluntary. Any further claims are disingenuous.

Journalists, stop writing contradictory language: "The study, which cannot prove a cause-and-effect relationship, raises safety concerns about the use of melatonin" Boilerplate disclaimer about causal effect. Either it is causal, and raises concerns. Or it's not, and we can move on.
