- BackMarket isn't inherently evil, but they've found the perfect formula: European environmental guilt + premium branding + regulatory cover = inflated margins on recycled products
True circular economy should make reuse MORE accessible, not a luxury 🌍

- BackMarket's real volume comes from B2B sales to companies wanting "sustainable" credentials

These corporate buyers don't comparison shop as aggressively

Individual consumers subsidize this corporate greenwashing

BackMarket's premium pricing correlates with EU sustainability regulations timeline

2019: Right to Repair laws → 2020: BackMarket pricing jumps

They positioned as "compliance partners" rather than discount refurbishers.Regulatory environment became competitive moat 📊

- True sustainability would make refurb phones significantly cheaper than new ones to drive adoption

Instead, BackMarket keeps prices high enough that many consumers still choose new
This REDUCES the environmental impact they claim to champion

- Traditional refurb market (eBay, local shops):
- Real 40-60% discounts
- Same quality standards
- Often better warranties

BackMarket's innovation? Branding + premium pricing for the same product

"Every purchase matters for the planet" = psychological pricing justification

Compare their marketing copy to US competitors - EU version is more guilt-focused

It's behavioral economics, not just sustainability 📈

- BackMarket's likely condition grades:
- Fair: 80% of new price
- Good: 85% of new price
- Excellent: 90% of new price

For reference: a 2-year-old phone loses 50-60% value naturally

They're selling "deals" at depreciation-defying prices
May 29, 2025 at 1:36 AM
That's 14% more expense than a new phone for a "sustainable" choice 🤔 . And the warranty is not even included

But why is Backmarket, the first destination in France to get a new phone

BackMarket positions itself as the eco-friendly alternative to buying new tech with a “Save the planet AND save money" strategy

But let's look at the actual numbers... 📊
iPhone 16 Pro 128GB:
- BackMarket "Excellent"(right)
- Rakuten flagship reseller: (not a rakuten lobbyist I swear) (left)

I first came across Backmarket in 2018, when I was in France looking to buy a refurbished Pixel 3.

Backmarket is well-known and widely used by people around me, it is the industry standard. A quick comparison makes it clear that Backmarket was far from offering the best deal.
