"Unlike 1999, tech’s profits justify the premium."

Are these profits coming from AI? Save for hardware vendors, which AI wave made fly, what profits are we talking about?

And what happens to Nvidia when it's suddenly clear that OpenAI isn't on a path to profitability?

Hype wave versus reality.

Upon seeing the chart, I was like:
* Your ARR is not annual (can't be yet)
* Nor is it recurring (can't know yet)

After 10s research (literally clicking the links):
* It's also fake
* And scam

Check your sources, people!

"We haven't yet shown a single dollar of profit, but we're already too big to fail."

Welcome to 2025.

What do you not understand?

@kentbeck.com's post (substack.com/inbox/post/1...) reminded me about my own "disastrous failure" story.

In the end, our clients just ended up with a bit of extra work. Nothing too serious.

That didn't age overly well.

It still somehow escapes me how these English developers build successful products.

For years, statistical forecasting was the way to go for me when someone asked for an estimate.

Then I got back to simple linear approximation.

TL;DR: It's much quicker. And good enough.

Find 5 differences.

The top picture is from Musk's tweet mocking the AWS outage.
The bottom is from the original CNBC article.

(And it's not to defend AWS or anything.)

Candidates mass applying with AI.
Companies mass rejecting with AI.
(Not so new) hacks to trick the AI tools emerge.

Both hiring and looking for a job is sure fun these days.

Is it only me, or is it not sustainable?

Women-led startups get less than half the money and still deliver better revenues.

www.bcg.com/publications...

We could wonder whether data-driven (in their own declarations) leaders of VCs will take notice. I wouldn't hold my breath, though.

Same data. Completely different message.

The only trick? Changing the chart type to cumulative.

Now, one has to wonder why LinkedIn now displays traffic data on a cumulative chart by default. Why would they want users to perceive their traffic as better than it really is?

Not that good at telling jokes, though ;)

1 picture = 1000 words:

1. As a startup, you're on the left side (because probability)
2. As a VC, all you care about is on the right side
3. Do the math

Yes, even if a VC (2) invested in a startup (1), it changes nothing. It's just expendable.

When startups focus on securing funding, they play the startup funding theater.

However, the investors who give them money assume that they are on a good, old, boring growth trajectory.

Those two are very different.

ChatGPT seasonality.

2/3 of usage coming from students?

I think we have a bigger problem than whether or not OpenAI is profitable.

Except I don't think our education system has a chance to catch up anytime soon.

Funny how narrowly we see AI applications from within the software development bubble.

Interesting how the expectations evolve, too. AI stopped being as creative? Or have we started spotting how generic it is?

"We can see an overall decrease in a favorable outlook on AI."

One interesting finding in @gregorojstersek.bsky.social's summary of the last StackOverflow dev survey.

As developers get to use more AI they trust it less.

A surprise? If you're paying attention, then probably not so much.
