I am an assistant professor at the Czech University of Life Sciences, specializing in the ecology and taxonomy of insects. I have a passion for photography, data analysis, R, and forensic entomology
Larval morphology is a neglected topic in entomology as they're usually a bit boring. Which leads to less interest from publi and some professional entomologist as well, but check out this beautiful trilobite. It's amazing!
Revisiting the larval morphology of Oiceoptoma thoracicum (Coleoptera: Staphylinidae: Silphinae)
Abstract. Precise identification of insect species and their developmental stages (instars) on human remains is crucial for estimating the postmortem inter

Dear #Rstats & #ecology, does anybody have textbook recommendations for applications of species distribution models?

Ideally covering how to deal with sketchy occurrence data, aimed for biology grad students with a more applied focus (i.e. not too overloaded with scary fundamental statistics).

I see a similar bias in entomology, where we focus on adults, meanwhile we almost completely ignore the larvae. Especially in beetles the discrepancy in our knowledge about life stages is staggering.

We are still recruiting Brazilian experts in species ID at Pivotal. It's remote flexible work so a really handy side gig.

If you can identify Brazilian plants or mammals from photos, of frogs, bats or birds from audio, please apply! 🧪

Do you agree with this approach or do you consider it extortion? After 15+ years of contemplating the issue I still cannot decide what is the lesser evil here.

Excellent paper. 👍👍 How did you keep track of the number of generations at different regimes and localities? I'll be "stealing" parts of your methodology for sure. 😁
Models of pest impact predict that climate warming will alter growth rates and distributions of insect pests.

How do trait-specific evolutionary responses affect predictions?

Have a look at our new paper rdcu.be/d6G2u in @naturecomms.bsky.social to find out. Short summary below.
Life-history adaptation under climate warming magnifies the agricultural footprint of a cosmopolitan insect pest
Nature Communications - Current statistical projections of pest impact under climate change neglect the role of rapid genetic adaptation. Here the authors show that evolutionary responses in pest...

A new review indicates that Dengue virus affects its mosquito hosts in ways that possibly increase disease spread. 🦟🦠

E.g. it may make infected mosquitoes more active, more likely to bite, more likely to re-bite if interrupted, and feed longer.

Dengue Virus Effects on Aedes aegypti Mosquitoes: Genetic Manipulation or Byproduct?
A new research review examines how carrying dengue virus affects Aedes aegypti mosquitoes' life cycle and behavior and whether the virus manipulates its mosquito host—or if changes are byproducts of o...
