A quote from the story: "My mother unhooks birds from the sky as if they’re cheap earrings that will turn her earlobes green. She tosses them into the cavern of her mouth and makes her mind a sky. My mother tells me not to think so much. That the moment I consider myself a failure, I take my foot off the neck of this rotten world. Because I’ll never have to live without knowing her, my mother will never die. Some lives are so wide that they can hold the whole of your own within them."

I love this from Teju Cole. Part of the reason fiction (and cinema) connect is that his bridge analogy is how life works as well. Keep building bridges!

Teju Cole quoted in the New York Times. “That’s what trying to work with unconventional forms feels like: You’re crossing the bridge while you’re constructing the bridge,” he said. “I want people to read my work and think, ‘Wait, I didn’t know that was allowed.’ Any book that is finding its own form is implicitly saying, ‘Well, it’s allowed now.’”

Teju Cole's writing is so good at undercutting realities in a barely perceivable way. In Tremors, of the 31 pgs I've read, it's all third person, except for a run of four paras where he shifts to addressing "you", as a character involved in the story, then shifts back without revealing anything.
