Great piece. I fear the BBC fading away is not the likely negative outcome - the more likely one is becoming State GB News.

According to this, about 35% of the crops grown in the US is human food, and it’s mostly produce, so the 1/3 figure for CA is probably correct for “human food grown in the US”. But the US imports a lot of food too. And there’s processed soy and corn.

So the idea is to make the BBC more impartial, like NHK in Japan, in the hope that it won’t be a political football? The problem is that it’s already a football and its critics don’t want it to be impartial, they want It to be GB News.

I recommend the chapter in The Haves and the Have-Yachts by Evan Osnos about his old neighbours in Greenwich, CT and how easily they bent the knee to Trumpism.

As someone else said, the modern professional managerial class aren’t cut out to resist fascism or indeed have moral opinions about anything. It’s not how they’re trained, educated, or incentivised. Individuals will of course resist, but it’s against the grain.

Sorry to ask, but since I live in Canada now I have no idea - which successful programme do you mean?

And it’s one thing to be a coward in the face of your own suddenly authoritarian government who’s very able and willing to punch you if you look funny. It’s another to be one about a foreign government who can mostly only affect you tangentially and is already wrecking your investments.

Yes, I think you did. What I’ve read just indicates that Prescott thought the coverage was pro-trans and unbalanced:

What are the key claims made in the leaked internal BBC memo?
The BBC's director-general and head of news resigned on Sunday following mounting accusations of editorial bias at the British broadcaster, including in the editing of a speech by U.S. President Donald Trump.

I would t worry about that, I don’t think they did - the Telegraph report was generally very biased and designed to inflame right-wing opinions.

Nah, for a buddy comedy you need a Predator and an Alien forced to work together to solve Riddick’s murder. Detective Xenomorph is the by-the-book officer who’s a week from retirement, Lt Yautja is the traumatised war criminal who gets flashbacks to the Alien-Predator war.

Also, the idea that the BBC is not transphobic ENOUGH is one only the Telegraph could love.

Yeah, I’ve had my issues with Davie but this is entirely the wrong thing to resign about. I hope that his replacement can and will fight for the BBC’s independence and reputation, and freedom to be an impartial and fair news provider, with the full support of our government.
