We are told things are getting better. They aren’t.
“Hell Is Here” is what the world looks like when greenwashing replaces truth.

Why the most taboo words in environmentalism are "overpopulation" and "less."

I’ve grasped it. You’re describing demographic momentum.
I’m describing ecological overshoot.
They aren’t the same thing.
Declining birth rates don’t fix a planet already beyond its biophysical limits.
I'm not sure you've grasped the message of either Runciman's article or my thread. As Runciman puts it: “Much of what will happen is already determined, so that even dramatically declining birth rates in some places will have little overall impact [on the residual rise in population]”.

Dismissing people as “clinging to an outdated idea” is easier than engaging with ecology.

Population isn’t about nostalgia. It’s about land, water, soil, habitat loss, nutrient cycling, fisheries, and mass extinction.

Emissions are only one symptom. Overshoot is the whole condition.
That section of the film is incoherent to say the least, but if it has a motif, it is the tragic sight of someone desperately clinging to an idea long after the evidence has departed. share.google/R3sJQ4XRxbQg...

Wrong question. Overshoot isn’t something humanity “fixes.”
The real issue is whether we’re willing to confront a truth too painful to face: ecological limits are non-negotiable, even if we refuse to see them.
Right, and your solution is ...?

“Hell Is Here.”
Hundreds of thousands of species are already gone.
Millions more are in the extinction pipeline.
Sophia Pineda Ochoa’s new documentary “Greenwashed” exposes that truth with rare honesty.

• Nothing usurps economic growth
• Actions are fine unless it changes my lifestyle
• We need more energy—just not limits
• Fixing climate’s OK, even if it wrecks everything else

People cause 100% of climate change, biodiversity loss, microplastics, toxins, invasive species, and water scarcity. But media rarely frames it that way — because it means confronting our entire consumer culture, not just one product.
Food causes 22-34% of climate change.
But it only gets 4% of the media coverage.

Why? Neglect. Misunderstanding. And a hell of a lot of greenwashing.
“Emissions from food are still very underreported,” @jennysplitter.bsky.social, Sentient's editor-in-chief, tells Anay Mridul of Green Queen. Learn more about our analysis of 11 major U.S. outlets:

So you’re saying 7.2 billion people don’t eat, wear clothes, need shelter, use water, or occupy land? Consumption levels vary, but 8.2 billion bodies still require resources. Scale matters—overshoot isn’t just about excess, it’s about total demand.
It's not because of 8.2 billion people. It is because of 1 billion ppl who consume like crazy.

Calling population a “distraction” is the distraction. Real systems thinking means facing uncomfortable truths: yes, the system is broken—but human demand has scaled so far beyond planetary limits that no system can solve it without contraction.
Again. I know these arguments. You won't convince me.

This overpopulation argument is a nice way to avoid touching any systemic and political issues and aspects.

This is a boon for our toxic economic system and its maintenance in our minds as something "natural".

Devising solutions to climate change and loss of biodiversity while ignoring the effects of 8B people is like trying to calculate the area of a circle while ignoring the radius.
Developed nations have the lowest rate of children per family, yet we accelerate climate change the most.

It’s not the population, it’s late-stage capitalism and mindless consumerism.
