How does it handle the awful backlash against the writers—women of colour—who had attention to the book?

Extraordinary. What a loss to us all to have a world without Kevin O'Neill in it.

When I worked on the Lonely Planet Jamaica guide, I often listed places purely on the strength of their goat curry. Including one near the National Library in Kingston so hard-working researchers could be well-fed when working in the archives!

Fantastic article Alison (and brilliant archive work). Poor George - but I'm so glad you took him roses in the end. How strange and wonderful that we can form such close relations with those long past.

The £17bn compensation (in today's money) the British government paid to enslavers in the 1830s wasn't even that long ago: the final debt repayment was only made in 2015! So if you were paying UK tax then, you helped pay back the last of it. I know I did. 🤮 www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...
The Treasury’s tweet shows slavery is still misunderstood | David Olusoga
The modern equivalent of £17bn was paid out to compensate slave owners for the loss of their human property. Some people believe we should be proud, says the historian and broadcaster David Olusoga

I don't think even 2000AD survived me finishing my A Levels, but 60s Doctor Who always held its cachet for some reason - Hartnell and Troughton as cool to me as The Prisoner, which I'm sure must have come out on VHS at this time and I devoured. Unless I'm misremembering- the memory cheats!

Great thread - I was 16 in 1989 & this really chimed with me, especially the line about putting things in the toy box & the reminder of how important the Poll Tax riot was. Season 26 felt very think when I was helping my brother staple his fanzine together and stealing his Sonic Youth records.

I'm literally using this image in a talk I'm giving on Saturday about the Shackletons during the First World War! (Emily Shackleton was a Girl Guides district commissioner in East Sussex.)

I always thought there was a great polar jewel heist movie to be made about this because Shackleton's brother Frank was involved, but then I realised you can't improve on perfection.
