I love this. Japan doesn’t have to join #HorizonEurope, it wants to join because it is a good and well run research programme. I’m proud to be involved with implementing it.

Has it worked well with every President ? I think not. Maybe a wider variety of voices at the top would be useful ??

Not really. The proposal for Four vice-presidents for 4-8 years, one of which would become the President for two years, rather strengthens the presidency, and prevents it from a single overbearing figure that we have seen in the past

@colombewarin.bsky.social very true, review meetings are a crucial interaction between the research projects that we fund and our project officers. We do have standard guidance for them but nothing can replace the talent and enthusiasm of our staff

No it will not. The single rule book (the financial regulation) would not prevent any of the ideas presented in the article.

Makes sense

🧪 the research community wants simplification, then opposes every one that the European Commission proposes! #genderequality remains a key component of the European Research Area, but reporting on it and assessing it for every research project is an excessive burden and needs to change.

🧪 people want simplification in principle, just not « that » one. There is a confusion here - gender equality remains a fundamental principle of the European Research Area, but that doesn’t mean it need to be explained, assessed and reported on for every single research project, that’s unnecessary

« Address the imbalance while keeping the accounting system as simple as possible » can’t be done. A single flat rate of indirect costs was the biggest simplification ever made, please tell me we are not going back on that!!

Nature based solutions, effective and cost-effective in mitigating climate change, there is plenty of evidence that they work, many of the research projects that we fund at #REA are ready to be deployed now.

But « R&I ministers want a large standalone programme » is not really news, of course they do, but they don’t hold the purse strings. It is other Ministers that bed to be convinced.

We have now tried multiple methods to calculate personnel costs, none of them have been fully satisfactory, none of them led to real simplification, none of them avoided errors, that’s why we have gone for lump sum funding, which avoids the problem completely.
