Are any of the protagonists on The Summer I Turned Pretty supposed to be sympathetic? Are we supposed to sympathize with any of their decision-making? Is this like Succession, where they're all the bad guy and we get to enjoy their suffering?

So here's the interesting thing (imo). The teaching force (public + private) grew from 1.3M to 3.7M between 1955 and 2021. With a bit less rounding, it's an increase of 188%. And if you look at the change in total nonfarm payroll in the U.S. from October 1955 to October 2021 it's...189%.

The tricky piece is that the ones who don't foot the bill don't show up in the data (due to not taking out debt).

I assume ed admin looks pretty good here because students are often not footing the bill and are typically guaranteed a raise.
I took a quick look at the debt and earnings levels of programs that the negotiated rulemaking committee deemed "professional," as well as other large doctoral programs that were excluded (in spite of having better debt-to-earnings ratios).

We keep paying teachers more for graduate degrees, but the evidence they improve teaching is not there. Add the surge in online credentials and you’ve got a really ugly incentive structure.
I wonder sometimes about the number of colleges that leaned into online credentialing for the short term $$$ and are now seeing the long term costs showing up...
(Long term costs, I'd add, that more than just colleges are paying)
