Fugitive slave rendition helped lead to what Nick Parrillo calls the “salary revolution.” Bounties undermine legitimacy in administration because they incentivize bad faith actors by offering them more money for doing their jobs poorly.

The Fugitive Slave Act of 1850 literally offered $10 to commissioners who certified a person as a slave, versus $5 to those who didn’t.

This arrived today. $10 on eBay. Probably my favorite history book ever. I read it during law school after my conlaw professor recommended it to me (he’s a legal historian of the Civil War era).

Pretty cool birthday gift from my in-laws. A deed signed by Ulysses Grant. Their family owned land in rural Wisconsin beginning in the 1870s. It’s now hanging in my office.

The past few years, I've edited Routledge's Law Officer's Pocket Manual. This year, I felt it necessary to include some information about immigration enforcement. Reading Noem v. Vasquez Perdomo, and I'm *shocked* to learn that Kavanaugh is just buying right wing, anti-immigrant propaganda.

Abe likes to lay next to my desk when I’m working. Note the new edition of Hart & Wechsler to his right.

Alito is a precise judge because he doesn't openly say "Trump is the law" or "recognizing LGBTQ people as equals is too WOKE"? Quite an interesting argument, and I'm not sure I'd characterize his approach to the judicial process as "careful" or "very precise."

Ilya is one of those guys that makes you wonder: “how could such a stupid person get such a large audience?”
No principles. No standards. Just “libertarianism,” which maybe never meant anything. But it *really* doesn’t mean anything now.
