Lowland beech forest in the Forest Reserve Joseph Zwaenepoel in Belgium on a recent visit. Appreciating beech in its native range and great to see so much standing and fallen deadwood.

Nice also to see some unfamiliar continental fauna like Roe Deer, Marsh Tit, Nuthatch, and Short-toed treecreeper.

After spending some time in East Mayo back in May, a highlight was exploring some of the woodland along the shore of Lough Cullin.

It was very uplifting to wander along this wild shoreline and see Bilberry above knee height and even the most palatable tree species regenerating.

A Hairy Wood Ant (Formica lugubris) nest under Juniper in Killarney NP. A healthy nest with strong foraging trails fanning out into the surrounding woodland. Part of an ongoing project to map this species in Co. Kerry.

A highlight of 2024: mapping isolated wild trees in the Kerry uplands, supported by the @npwsireland.bsky.social small recorders grant. Lots of oak, aspen, and other relic woodland vegetation on inaccessible ledges and islands.

A selection of wild oaks hidden away in upland ravines in Tipperary, Tyrone, and Kerry. Important refuges for wild tree genetics and their associated species.

A nice ash wood in Fermanagh during the summer with Papaver cambricum (Welsh poppy) dotted throughout the field layer, interrupting a sea of green.
