A highlight of 2024: mapping isolated wild trees in the Kerry uplands, supported by the @npwsireland.bsky.social small recorders grant. Lots of oak, aspen, and other relic woodland vegetation on inaccessible ledges and islands.

I am really looking forward to the new radio documentary being aired at 3.00pm today, Monday 27th Oct, on RTÉ Radio1. The ‘Silent Valley - the last Irish Ring Ouzels’, it examines the plight of our Ring Ouzels (down to just one known pair in 2024) and asks if they can be saved?

Macron remarks are notable- some quotes: "We have been incredibly naive in entrusting our democratic space to social networks that are controlled either by large American entrepreneurs or large Chinese companies, whose interests are not at all the survival or proper functioning of our democracies."

We have been incredibly naive in entrusting our democratic space to social networks.”

Nice day out on the islands of Derryclare Lough on Tuesday. We were out to collect Yew berries & cuttings for propagation for further planting locally. We were also hoping to collect some Rock Whitebeam berries as well but didn't find any unfortunately. Quite a rare species away from Killarney.

UK is well on course for losing Willow Tit, Spotted Flycatcher & Wood Warbler as breeding species in our lifetime. Wood Warbler already virtually gone from England. I think Willow Tit would be first extinction of a resident bird since Capercaillie in 1700s or White-tailed Eagle in 1918. #ornithology
3. The Woodland indicator has shown worrying recent short-term declines, but shows signs of stabilising. Favourable climatic conditions may explain this, favouring species like Blackcap. Nightingale too is shows a recent increase. But Willow Tit and migrants like Spotted Flycatcher are in decline.

What would Orwell think about a huge face on a gigantic screen telling a crowd of people they should wage war on foreigners and dissidents? No way of knowing, I guess.
When speaking to Tommy Robinson at the far right demonstration in London today, Elon Musk wore a t-shirt saying "What would Orwell think?"

So let's dive in - what would George Orwell think about Tommy Robinson and Elon Musk? 🧵

Lowland beech forest in the Forest Reserve Joseph Zwaenepoel in Belgium on a recent visit. Appreciating beech in its native range and great to see so much standing and fallen deadwood.

Nice also to see some unfamiliar continental fauna like Roe Deer, Marsh Tit, Nuthatch, and Short-toed treecreeper.

After spending some time in East Mayo back in May, a highlight was exploring some of the woodland along the shore of Lough Cullin.

It was very uplifting to wander along this wild shoreline and see Bilberry above knee height and even the most palatable tree species regenerating.
