He's a hard-head that supposes he can still capture a few wins if not a KK if he continues. He really should withdraw.

💯
He was wincing from the pain after ramming his head into Takanosho's chest-shoulder at the tachiai. He won the match but was experiencing big-time discomfort. Problems, too, with his ankle and rt knee-both injured during Aug's jungyo.

Wait until you're forty, Douglas.
You'll see!

He injured his neck in his match vs Takaysu on Day 4 of Aki--during his run for ozeki.
He's been experiencing pain since to various degress. On bad days, he completely rests; on the others he only takes light practice.
In his bout last night, he SMASHED his neck into Takanosho and was suffering.

He was unhappy enough for the three of us.

I think that's a compliment.🙃

It's going around!
After Wakatakakage's injury-flaring Day 7 victory over Takanosho which clearly exacerbated his neck injuries ( twas horrible to watch ) they only way the younger Onami brother can win tonight (versus Oshoma) is to henka.

"That's when you do your best," he reminded his yokozuna.

Shifting his mindset, Hoshoryu went on to defeat his next opponent, Tamawashi, to remain in the fight for the yusho.

He's done it before and who knows?
Perhaps Hoshoryu prefers chasing rather than leading for the championship.

But even forcing Onosato to a long match, or make him break a sweat (which he hasn't done in Kyushu), would be a masterstroke for our birthday boy.
You can do it, Tamawashi-san!
Tanjoubi omedetou gozaimasu.

Tamawashi's gold star scalps include:
Terunofuji (4)
Harumafuji
Kisenosato
Kakuryu
Onosato

Although he was not victorious, the 40-year-old Tamawashi reflected, “I gave it my best. I wanted to stay on the dohyo as long as possible.”

Nakabi (Day 8) is Tamawashi's 41st birthday and the only gift he wants is his second Onosato kinboshi to pair with the first--won on Day 10 of Nagoya 2025.

From films of him with his heyamates, he's good natured--but always with the gravitas of a yokozuna (you can tell who's the smiling boss) so I don't see in him a clown or jokester. I suspect the prob is maintaining full concentration while not becoming overly tight. He needs Kakuryu!

That's brilliant!
As the brothers' unofficial, unknown and unbeknownst to them publicist, I will put a bug in their ears about this--that will put them in sumo history!--as it rescues the basho from sheer predictability.

Pretty sure Motoharu will go for it, but the younger brother can be a pill.

Whadda life!
And it looks so good on you. You’re just getting cuter and cuter all the time.

You are my favorite and most esoteric prodigious farmer!

So true. One of the tenets (or marvels) of a yokozuna is consistency as Onosato demonstrates.

I've always wondered about the coaching availed to Hoshoryu, but what to do in sumo?
It's not like Michael Corleone tossing out Tom Hagen bc he's not a "wartime consiglieri." But that's what Hosh needs.

but once I made the decision, I stuck to it, because changing it would have made me hesitate, and I can't win that way--and never against a yokozuna."

To reporters swarming around him in his dressing room, Wakamotoharu explained,
"I've been getting beaten by (Hoshoryu's) speed quite a lot lately, so it forced me to think a lot about this match," he began.
"I'm not very good at dodging moves so I was very nervous, ...
