Pathology is my jam 🔬

Here for my two greatest passions in life: science & silly animals
Happy 99th Birthday to Sir David Attenborough!

Joyfully showing the beauty of the planet we live on and share with others. Always educating on the complex ecological interactions it relies on.

A legend - here seen in his natural habitat: on the ground next to one of world's beautiful creatures 🌍

The best part is that they just use their own definition of 'species' and call it a day.

Remarkably, relying mainly on morphology became obsolete due to the rise in genetic sequencing - something Colossal should be familiar with.

A species is whatever we want it to be, so everyone is correct 👏🏼

This short interview by the New Scientist gets to the crux of the whole thing pretty well.

This mechanism might be the key to their ability to see color despite only having one type of photo receptor, which would otherwise leave them restricted to solely distinguish between black and white.

Let's talk about the fascinating physics of 🐙 eyes:

Cephalopods' pupils can be "U", "W" or dumbbell-shaped acting as a prism and causing an effect known as chromatic aberration.

But why is that and how does it possibly enable them to see color despite only having one type of photo receptor? 🌈

They engage in 'lek mating' where a bunch of males gather in one place all performing their mating displays, which mostly consists of the mating call and some wing flapping while hanging upside down from a tree (very bat-y behavior).
Females get to pick their favorite performer.

Meet Hypsignathus monstrosus - the hammer-headed bat 🔨🦇

They are frugivores found throughout Western & Central Africa.
Males have large resonance chambers in their skull used for mating calls while females are smaller with more fox-like faces making them the most sexually dimorphic bat species

Meet the Asian Sheephead Wrasse!

They can get up to 100cm long and weigh over 10kg.
Females are able to transition to males after reaching a critical body size - developing a bulbous forehead and aggressive behavior post-transition.

Nature never fails to amaze 🧪
