Fun little side-trip for an AvGeek in Dayton yesterday: A speed-walk through the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force.
Dayton, Ohio: Up Close And Personal with the XB-70 Valkyrie
The National Museum of the United States Air Force made for a fun distraction on a layover this week.

Never be afraid to write your heart out. To write your ass off. To write until your hands cramp. Because when you look back at the miles of ink behind you you might just have a masterpiece.

The hotel in Jackson, Mississippi just lost power - conveniently moments after squaring up my check. “We goin’ home early!” Was the unified cry from the kitchen. Lights are out, elevator is down, but the music system plays on. Priorities and all.

Good Monday morning, y'all. Flying tale up on Substack. Speaking at a school's career day on the heels of a major airline accident, and students threw a curveball I should have expected.
Extracurricular Activities
The opportunity for events outside the flight deck presents a fun change of pace and a different sort of challenge

A little behind schedule here, but it is still Monday morning. A few words by and for those in the business, following an air travel catastrophe.
The Aftermath: Coffee. Clouds. Coping. Caring.
It's been so long since a major airline crash in America that many pilots haven't had to process a major accident before.

Lots of folks calling for heads on pikes, RE: NTSB posting updates only on X. For aviation news, there’s no better source than this guy, and he gives important context. Read. Thanks.
This requires context: The NTSB, while highly influential, is not a big agency & has a small comms team. Long history of the board using Twitter (now X) for its comms that predate the 2nd Trump Admin. and Musk's ownership. Enormous media attention here, low resources. X changed, the NTSB didn't.

The first time around, Donold didn’t seem to have a problem with DEI programs at the FAA. What changed?
FAA employees with disabilities targeted by Trump's anti-DEI push
Despite current policy, the FAA during Trump’s first administration actively sought to recruit workers with disabilities.

Hello all cable news: do not broadcast the President of the United States talking about air traffic control. He doesn't know what he's talking about.

“I know it and my heart hurts for you,” I said.

American citizen. Two generations of military service in the family, and they feel the push to leave the country. Heartbreaking. 4/4

I told him about some Central and South American countries I knew expats lived on a budget. Two of them are nations that may stop being so friendly in the near future, we both realized as the words spilled out of my mouth.

“This place isn’t safe for me, at the rate things are going,” he said. 3/4

“You see more than Atlanta. Where in the world can I go live?”

I blinked hard, caught off guard.

“Let’s make that, where can I go live, without fear, on a modest budget?”

“While I’ve got you here, let me ask you something,” the driver said. I was the last one on the employee bus, my stop well beyond the point where the others got off in the parking lot today.

“I’ll make up a good answer if I don’t know.” I expected some airplane question. (1/4)

Less than an hour after being home, was right back out the door for an evening of riding shotgun with a friend while he practiced his instrument approaches in his Mooney 252. Thank goodness for cabin heat!

Made a quick trip to Asheville with Amy. WNC has been out of the news cycle for a while but folks are still hurting. Pictured is second Gear’s former home, a favorite stop of mine on layovers (secondhand sporting goods). The businesses still hanging on need your support… get up there and spend!

The irony is that I’m based on grass. Paved airports ARE my adventures.
I've camped with my Mooney a time or two--always next to a paved runway, though!
