And so, Jesus taught lessons that disrupted the divisions in our “normal” political, social, and religious relationships in order to show the world God’s radically inclusive love.

“Love your enemies.”

If there is an “other side” or “enemies” to blame, the forces that defy God, those that create the dividing lines will evade scrutiny and thrive.

The list is inexhaustible for all the ways that rulers in every age have used fear and hate of the other to gain wealth, power, and control.

And so throughout history nations rise against nation; brother against brother; culture against culture; parent against child; skin color against skin color; straight against gay; cis against trans; rich against poor; German against Jew; citizen against immigrant; Protestant against Catholic…
