“Beware of strong drink. It can make you shoot at tax collectors, and miss.”

A 1943 zinc-coated steel penny made to save copper during WW2. Worth a few dollars today, from what I could find out. A nice piece of history.

Rereading this now. So well written, and also an object lesson that’s relevant to what’s happening in parts of the world today.

During the winter here, when conditions are right, a low sun will light up ice crystals in the air, creating a “transporter effect.”

Here’s an entertaining, hilarious book (1986) that pokes fun at unnecessarily technical-sounding words or phrases used to describe simple, commonplace things. An enjoyable light read! You may find yourself calling a spoon a “noninvasive transfer utensil,” or a window screen an “arthropod filter.”😁

Some of my amateur splatter art. I thought the colours would go well together. Purely for fun.

Another web covered in early morning dew. This one’s horizontal and two-tiered. A closer look reveals a tiny spider hanging upside down under the top layer, waiting for its prey.

Morning dew settled onto several orb webs in my garden the other morning, highlighting their amazing architecture.

I’d like to see the Nobel Peace prize go to someone who hasn’t been in the news; someone whose quiet, effective work in the shadows turns out to be far more valuable than some posturing loudmouth.

My orange baboon tarantula molted recently. She’s about half grown now (got her last year as a captive-bred spiderling).

This is a rare picture, because she stays in her webbed retreat most of the time. I hardly ever see her.

“Master Slave Husband Wife: An Epic Journey From Slavery To Freedom” (2023) - Ilyon Woo

This is a well-researched, beautifully written modern account of William and Ellen Craft’s escape from slavery (see the previous book in this list). Theirs is an incredible story.

While mowing the lawn today I came up to this interesting flat, shiny mushroom blocking my mower’s path. It looked so nice that I mowed around it, rather than over it.

One of my favorite Kirk moves is when he attacks the wall during a fight in “Journey To Babel.” 😂 🖖🏻
