That he's basically desperate for money how can I shove it in his face that I have enough enough money to not work and to waste my whole day trying to see zebras or go to coffee farms or whatever?

Also, the hotel kinda markets itself as being able to help you book tours of specific parks/whatever - I was gonna ask the waiter-type-guy for info on stuff like that and a bunch of other tourism-related stuff, but when the guy just told me

If I had known it was gonna be as severe as it's been I might not have travelled here, and I probably wouldn't have planned on staying for like a month and a half.
December 21, 2025 at 8:31 AM
Like, how can you go to dumb little things like the giraffe centre and enjoy giving wild animals food when you're also seeing people beg you for food? Little kids? This doesn't register with other people who have travelled here?
December 21, 2025 at 8:31 AM
Like, how are you supposed to enjoy being in a place like this, checking out things like national parks and going on safaris, when you're seeing desperation like this? Or do they just go on such preplanned group tours that they don't end up seeing it?
December 21, 2025 at 8:31 AM
Obviously there are reasons why people act this way, but I don't know how the fuck other people who have traveled here don't mention this kind of thing when they talk about their experiences in Kenya online.
December 21, 2025 at 8:31 AM
I just had to be like, "I don't give my phone number to people." And then even after that he was like, "We can talk more about remote jobs later!"
December 21, 2025 at 8:31 AM
I'm not sure how that would work for various reasons, and after I basically got done telling him as much he tried to ask for my phone number, social media accounts, email address, etc., etc. - I told him I don't use social media and when he asked for my phone number
December 21, 2025 at 8:31 AM
This morning I was eating breakfast at the hotel and the waiter type guy who brings you your food started asking me about remote jobs. I've never had one but suggested things like Taskrabbit or Fiverr or whatever - I guess he wants one that's based in America -

I probably should've given her something, and at this point I'm thinking about buying extra mini-bags of chips or something for when I inevitably get asked for food like that. But the minute I didn't give her something was the minute they stopped tagging along.
December 21, 2025 at 8:31 AM
I've given food I just bought to a bunch of random kids who have asked me for it at this point, and whatever I had was stuff I just bought from the grocery store. When she asked me for food I was just kinda like, "Oh, I don't have that much food right now..."
December 21, 2025 at 8:31 AM
I kinda chatted with them at first but they (mainly the kid) kept chatting even after I got quieter, and kind of walking with me whether I wanted them to or not. At one point the mother said something like, Jesus wanted us to run into you. Then eventually the kid started talking about being hungry.
December 21, 2025 at 8:31 AM
I've never had people act this way toward me anywhere else (so far).

Yesterday I was walking back to my hotel and this woman and her kid (probably like 12) were conveniently going the same direction as me, and started asking me random questiions.
December 21, 2025 at 8:31 AM
Obviously I realize how privileged I am to be in the position I am vs. most Americans, let alone most Kenyans, but it doesn't feel like a great sign when people are so openly desperate in front of/at you. The vast majority of people I've seen here haven't acted that way, but
December 21, 2025 at 8:31 AM
start asking for 50 shillings or whatever, or have random people start trying to get me to come into shop x to book a safari, and then continue to follow me to sell me on the idea of booking it when I just kept walking, etc., etc.

I was in a random small French town awhile back and there was a group protesting the fact that vaping isn't allowed indoors. It's ridiculous how addicted to nicotine people are in Europe. It's like the one way that America's better.
December 20, 2025 at 9:22 PM
I was in a bunch of random-ass European countries recently and it's shocking how accepted and normal smoking is in them. In Hungary and Romania people are basically still smoking indoors.

So what cake recipes has everyone found so far?

These people are Dorian Gray without the painting.

We really shouldn't be that surprised by this - she was solidly for Clinton in the 2008 primaries.
December 16, 2025 at 8:02 PM
I found out Biden dropped out of the election from a twitter post by The Irish Times, at a ball game where the twins lost to the brewers. So some ridiculously specific situation like that.

Man, I just keep finding more and more reasons to never go back to the US. Next the Supreme Court is gonna overturn birthright citizenship and that's gonna be my excuse for trying to permanently move somewhere else.

God I fucking hope so.
