I keep falling into this logic trap where I think that if we just keep doing something *really well* for a while, then eventually it will stick and we can take a break.

Like flossing. Or exercise.
Or, you know, Democracy.

Unfortunately though, Democracy seems to be very much like flossing.

I've seen folks talk about how "in four years" they'll be able to get back to their planned projects and I really don't think that's going to work out. People & projects losing funding now will not be able to hit pause and come back once funding is restored. Hard-won progress & capacity will be lost
I worry that not enough of a big deal is being made about how long-term the devastation of these budget cuts to our scientific and health agencies will be, beyond the absolute ruin they will cause in the acute period.

BREAKING: ICE and private prison contractor GEO Group are refusing to allow Mahmoud Khalil to hold his newborn son for the first time, even after his wife flew them over 1,000 miles to visit.

We just asked a federal court to order ICE to grant Mahmoud's request for a contact visit with his family.

So is American major media just going to pretend that Donald Trump and his venal band of brigands didn't just spend the last five years of this space-time continuum daily accusing Joe Biden of taking bribes from a foreign country—something Trump just PUBLICLY did to the tune of $400 MILLION DOLLARS?

Basic research matters, even when we don't know what the end results may bring, sometimes decades after it is begun. It makes society better. It saves lives. It makes us healthier, safer.
We owe this confidence to generations of scientists who pushed the boundaries of knowledge, not knowing if their efforts would make a difference. Oliver and Schafer didn’t put calf adrenal extracts into dogs to save my son but because they thought the world should know what adrenal glands do. 20/n

Every single GOP member on the House Judiciary Committee just voted to let Trump “deport” American citizens.

This is illegal, authoritarian, and unforgivable 🤬

Time to call, write, & protest before the full House votes.

Despite knowing the people on the search warrant weren't there, the ICE arrest team STILL took this family's phones, laptops, and life savings — and refused to leave a BUSINESS CARD so they could ask to get it back!

This stuff is sadly not unique to ICE; it happens with regular police raids too.
